What Size Jig Head for Speckled Trout?

Trout often feed off the bottom, so a slower fall gets more bites. Use 1/8oz on shallow grass flats and in calm water, 1/4oz as an all-around size, and 3/8oz to 1/2oz in deeper channels, wind and current. In winter, when trout stack up in deep holes and creeks, a 1/4oz to 3/8oz jig worked slow along the bottom is hard to beat.

Best Jig Head Colors for Speckled Trout

Chartreuse, pink and white jig heads stand out in stained water and at night. In clear water, go with red, unfinished lead or a natural color that matches your plastic. Pair a light head with a glow or white plastic under dock lights.

How to Fish a Trout Jig

Cast over grass flats and along drop-offs, let the jig sink, then work it back with a twitch-twitch-pause or a steady swim just over the grass. Trout usually hit on the fall, so watch your line. Under a popping cork, set your jig 18 to 30 inches below the cork and pop it every few seconds.
