Hunting and Fishing Depot is a family-owned and operated tackle shop, and we pour and paint our own redfish jigs right here in the USA. These are the jig heads we fish for red drum on grass flats, oyster bars, docks, jetties and in the surf, from slot reds tailing in skinny water to bull reds in the passes.

• Big Eye Jig Heads: oversized 3D eyes give a redfish a target to hit. Choose 2X hooks for everyday fishing, Ultra-Nor 4X hooks for bull reds around structure, or XL 3/0 heads for bigger plastics.

What Size Jig Head for Redfish?

Use the lightest jig that keeps you in touch with the bottom. On shallow flats and in skinny marsh water, 1/8oz to 1/4oz lets the bait fall slowly and stay out of the grass. Around docks, creek mouths and drop-offs, 1/4oz to 3/8oz is a good all-around pick. In deep passes, jetties, inlets and strong tide, go 1/2oz to 1oz or more so you stay on the bottom where the reds feed.

Best Jig Head Colors for Redfish

In clear water, red, copper, root beer and unfinished lead look natural. In stained or muddy water, chartreuse, pink and white stand out. Gold is a proven redfish color in any water, and a red head on a white or new penny plastic is hard to beat.

How to Fish a Redfish Jig

Cast past the fish or up-current of a point, let the jig fall to the bottom, then hop it back with short lifts and pauses. Most bites come as the jig falls or sits still, so stay tight to your line. On a sight-cast to tailing reds, drop the jig a few feet in front of the fish and just twitch it. Around oysters, a slow swim just off the bottom keeps you out of the shell.
