Speckled Trout Jig Heads: Best Size, Color and How to Rig Them

Speckled trout (spotted seatrout) eat a jig head and soft plastic as well as anything that swims. Because trout often feed up in the water column, the right jig head is usually lighter than you think. Here is how to choose one.

What Size Jig Head for Speckled Trout?

Where / When Jig Weight
Shallow grass flats and potholes, calm water 1/8oz

Best Jig Head Colors for Speckled Trout

  • Chartreuse, pink and white: stained water and night fishing under lights.
  • Red and unfinished: clear water, natural presentation.
  • Glow: dock lights, dawn and dusk.

How to Fish a Trout Jig

  1. Twitch-twitch-pause: cast over the grass, let it sink, then two quick twitches and a pause. Trout hit on the fall.
  2. Slow swim: reel just fast enough to keep the jig over the grass tops.
  3. Winter: work a 1/4oz to 3/8oz jig slowly along the bottom in deep holes and creek bends.
  4. Under a popping cork: set the jig 18 to 30 inches under the cork and pop it every few seconds.
